The first time I met the Brook & the Bluff was at the back door of Cat's Cradle, in Carrboro, North Carolina. It was a rainy, cold April afternoon and I'd only conversed with John Canada (the band's drummer) via Instagram DMs until that point. Waiting unsurely at the back door to the club, I got so excited when I saw the band come up the small driveway around the corner.
After placing me on the press list for the evening, we headed next door for some drinks and food before set prep. It was so kind of them to give me some time to chat, learn about their journey as a group, and take some shots pre-show. I watched the boys develop the evening's setlist on a napkin, and got the chance to toss in a recommendation of one of my favorite songs.
A few minutes later, we headed back over to the Cradle, and I let the boys get to it. It was such an experience to watch the preparation for a stage show - I hadn't had the opportunity before. As other attendees slowly trickled in, I met a friend of mine I hadn't known would be in town for the show. She'd connected with one of Alec's friends from college, and we all had a lovely time during their set. A collection of photographs lives below for your review. I wish I could remember more from this initial experience with the band - but I'm lucky enough to work with the Brook & the Bluff when they visit NC, and look forward to it each and every time.
